Gerhard Litscher

Gerhard Litscher is Full Professor at the Swiss University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SWISS TCM UNI), Switzerland, where he specializes in high-tech acupuncture and digital Chinese medicine. He has been President of the International Society for Medical Laser Applications (ISLA transcontinental) since 2012 and has served as German Vice President of the German-Chinese Research Foundation for Traditional Chinese Medicine (DCFG) since 2014. He serves as Vice Chairperson of the Committee on Cardiac Rehabilitation of the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies (2023–2028). In 2023, he was appointed Honorary President of the European Federation of Acupuncture and Moxibustion Societies and Honorary Professor at the China Beijing International Acupuncture Training Center of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences. He is also Chairman of the Consensus Guidelines for Laser Acupuncture of the World Association for Photobiomodulation Therapy (WALT).

Professor Litscher is a member of expert panels at the World Health Organization (WHO) for acupuncture and related fields and holds honorary or guest professorships at several leading universities and institutions in China.

From 2005 to 2023, he was Head of the Research Unit of Biomedical Engineering in Anesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine at the Medical University of Graz, Austria. During this period, he also headed the Research Unit for Complementary and Integrative Laser Medicine (2012–2023) and served as Founding Director and Chairman of the TCM Research Center (2007–2023).

He holds doctorates in both Technical Sciences and Medical Sciences. In August 2025, he was awarded an honorary doctorate (Dr. h.c. TCM univ.) by the Swiss TCM University. In 2026, he was appointed Distinguished Honorary Professor at the Macau Wang Qi Academy, Macau University of Science and Technology, and will assume the role of Honorary President of the American Society for Laser Acupuncture Therapy (ASLAT).

He has authored more than 700 scientific publications, including around 300 indexed in SCI/PubMed, and has edited or authored more than 20 books. He serves on the editorial boards of numerous international journals. With an i10-index exceeding 230 and a high h-index, he is recognized as one of the leading researchers worldwide in complementary medicine (Austria/Switzerland, Europe).
